Baseball - illustrates the beginning of hypothesis testing. Do an experiment many times - what results are you likely to get? Based on the question of whether pitchers tried to stop Hank Greenberg's home run record chase in 1938 with an inflated number of walks.
This project started after reading a few posts on the AP Stats group about a New York Times article suggesting prejudice by the pitchers.
I do not currently teach statistics, but I like the idea of an introductory lesson to the needs of a test statistic and a standardized distribution of the values. I think that a simpler example would be appropriate. If anyone is interested in pursuing this, I'd be game to modify this spreadsheet. Please contact me.
